Search Engine Reports

May, 2007
Google builds on the changes announced in March 2007 by replacing the "Search History" Google account owners have come to know with "Web History." Account owners who have installed the Google Toolbar and activated the PageRank feature will now be able to view (along with Google) a history of the sites they've viewed. Now, Google can track which sites people visit, and how long they stay, and factor this into their algorithm. Inbound links will still be important, as Google watches them deliver traffic - but perhaps they will recede in importance as actual popularity becomes known. For the time being, this may not make an impact on searches conducted by the general public, though Google account owners will probably see the difference in ranking of sites for which they've searched in the past.

Looking for a local product or service? Now you can call 800-GOOG-411, announce a category, and hear a list of the top 8 results from Google Maps. If you're not listed yet in Google Maps (formerly known as Google Local), you should be.

Microsoft has released a similar service, using 800-555-TELL, but some say its accuracy is lacking.

Now Adwords advertisers can specify the average cost they are willing to pay per click, instead of setting an absolute limit.

Adwords graduates multivariate testing from beta. Now you can test different elements of a landing page all at once.

Owners of sites not listed in Yahoo may appreciate a program that guarantees inclusion (not rankings) for up to five URLs, at $49, annually, each. Those already listed will have no use for it, unless Yahoo has overlooked important pages that could benefit from inclusion. The program includes weekly indexing and reporting on clicks, keywords, etc.

Merchants who use PayPal and Yahoo Search Marketing may now opt to have PayPal shopping cart icons added to their ads.

Yahoo Search advertisers must cut their ads from the former 190 character maximum to a new 70 character maximum; display URLs will be reduced to 35 characters, max.

Like Google and Yahoo, Microsoft has begun to factor quality into ranking of pay-per-click ads, reviewing key phrases, ads, and landing pages to confirm that ads match user needs. They've upgraded the adCenter, too, so you can bulk-upload keywords to individual campaigns, export data to Excel, and search your campaigns by keyword.

Microsoft Live Search now comes with ratings and reviews for business listings.

Ask introduces contextual advertising to its pay-per-click program on a limited basis, with about 90 publishers, right now.

It is now possible to manually remove a URL from Google's index using Google WebMaster Tools.
