Search Engine Reports
August, 2008 Yahoo has launched a new application programming interface (API) to help start-up engines like Me.dium, Hakia, and Cluuz compete in the world of search. The API allows access to the Yahoo index, and allows programmers to rank and blend results and flexibility in presentation of results. It seems that if Yahoo can't beat Google, it will do its best to undermine them. Google seeks to unseat Wikipedia with the new Google Knol. Outbound links from Knol are "nofollow," which means you cannot improve your link popularity by creating a page at Knol and linking it to your site, but you can drive traffic through these links. Yahoo has discontinued the keyword research tool hitherto available via Yahoo Search Marketing (once known as Overture). In response, Google Adwords has improved their keyword research tool. Now it shows the exact number of searches a key phrase commands, instead of its volume comparable to other phrases. Not all the bugs have been worked out yet, though: Sometimes it erroneously shows a key phrase as having no competition from other advertisers. Microsoft adCenter introduces an elementary version of Adwords' quality-based ranking, currently limiting its analysis of quality to click-through rate and maximum bid. Google has improved their ability to index Flash, but not well enough to suggest that Flash-driven sites will deliver results in search engines. After buying the DoubleClick Performics Affiliate Network, Google is phasing out its Pay-Per-Action program. In its place, it has launched the Google Affiliate Network, similar to Commission Junction or AzoogleAds. Advertisers pay on a cost-per-acquisition (CPA) basis. Google continues to lead the pack with over 7 billion searches reported by comScore in June and a market share of 61.5%. Its closest competitor, Yahoo, came in a distant second with 2.4 billion searches and a 20.9% market share. Efficient Frontier reports Google claims more than 75% of the U.S. search market.
