Search Engine Reports

April, 2009
The importance of latent semantic indexing becomes apparent with Google's inclusion of related keyphrases on search engine results pages.

Microsoft rumored to be rebranding their search engine again, in a desperate attempt to convince users it is better than ever. Which, judging by past attempts, it probably won't be.

Descriptions for some queries longer than three words in Google now exceed the traditional limit of 156 characters.

Google begins tracking users' browsing history in order to serve up more-relevant AdSense ads. Only users in the know will be able to take advantage of their opt-out policy, which seems almost as intrusive as the tracking, and certainly more cumbersome. Whatever happened to "don't be evil"?

Google Adsense introduces the expandable ad, which, when clicked, generates a popup up to twice the size of the original.

Google's "Insights for Search" tool can now be used to research keywords queried via Google News, Image and Product Search. The user can see what categories Google classifies the keyword under and pinpoint keyword searches geographically down to the metro area.

Google introduces the second version of Chrome, its browser, still in beta mode, but noted for speed and security. At a recent competition, it beat out Internet Explorer, FireFox and Safari for the "Most Secure Browser" award.

Yahoo closes Farechase, its discount travel search engine.

Microsoft retires adCenter Analytics, accepting no new users and announcing a shutdown date of December 31 for current users.

Grand Central, acquired by Google a few months ago, is now Google Voice, a Skype competitor. With Google Voice, you can use the Internet to make phone calls for free in the U.S.; send all your calls (home, work, and cell) to one voicemail system; and ring all your phones at once. No special equipment is required, as with Skype, but a side effect of this is that there is no video chat either (yet).
